The application of sintered structural parts in transportation, mainly in automotive industry requires high reliability and high service properties, especially fatigue and failure resistance. The integral criteria of failure resistance are the parameters of fracture toughness, which analysis for sintered materials is very pretentious. In the present work the parameters of KIC, KQ and J-integral, their definition, methods of evaluation and interpretation are described. Peculiarities of their application to sintered steels with particular regard to the pores structure and matrix properties are discussed. Relations between the yield strength and fracture toughness of sintered steels are quantified and the problem of the critical defect size is discussed.
