Current automotive applications are implemented as distributed architectures composed of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that communicate to one another via one or more network buses. Nowadays, the main challenge for an automotive designer is the generation of a low cost implementation via a low cost design process, the implementation satisfying the real time requirements. This paper focuses on the definition of an Intellectual Property (IP) based methodology and tool set that helps the designer in this difficult taks. The VCC (Virtual Component Co-design) methodology and tool set is the main key enabler of this new design process. The methodology allows a fast exploration of design alternatives, that is, finding a distribution of the functionality that optimizes the load of each ECU and choosing the communication protocol that reduces the communication delays. The methodology and the tool set are general enough to be applicable to application domains other than the automotive one.
