Hybrid porpulsion systems have been proposed in many publications and are now entering the market in first series production vehicles. The design of such propulsion systems requires adequate software tools which must have a clear underlying theoretical foundation in order to manage the complexity. In this ppaer such a methodology is presented and several examples of powertrain optimizations are given. To realize the expected benefits in fuel consumption a careful system optimization in the designphase and efficient controls in the operation phase is necessary. The motivation and the framework for the differnet approaches is defined, i.e. the notion of a 'well-to-wheel' efficiency for structural optimizations and the notion of 'cyles' for parameter and control optimizations is introduced. The two main modeling approaches (forward and backward formulation) are discussed. An overview over the most important ideas of hybrid powertrain modelling is given. The main advantage of the backward formulation is its very low computational effort. The disadvantages are the need of a-priori information, the missing ability to handle state events and other dynamic effects. The main optimization methods like Parametric Optimization, Optimal Control or Dynamic Programming are briefly discussed. Depending on the problem to be solved, one of these methods can be chosen. Many variants of forward and several backwards CAE tools are availabe. A public domain backwards CAE tool is the QSS-Toolbox 'light' for Matlab/Simulink developed at ETH, which is available at the URL http://www.lms.ethz.ch/Pub/Pub_temp.html. Several examples are presented which illustrate the general concepts introduced in the paper.
