The author investigates how computational fluid dynamics is used to improve the safety and performance of US Navy ships. Since men first went down to the sea in ships, one of their greatest fears has been the prospect of a fire at sea. In our modern age, even more terrible is the prospect of an attack with chemical or biological weapons. Now the US Navy is protecting its sailors against such events by deploying computer software for simulating fluid dynamics. The Navy's researchers are seeking to predict the flow of smoke through the ship from a fire, or of chemical agents during an attack, and thus take steps to minimise the risks. The Navy is also using the same type of software to improve the fuel management of its vessels. Both the Naval Research Laboratory, in Washington DC, and the Naval Surface Warfare Centre, headquartered just outside Washington in Crystal City Virginia, have chosen to use CFX, a computational fluid dynamics package developed by AEA Technology for their research. The software enables screen-based simulation research that minimises the need for expensive models and the complex physical tests that would otherwise have had to be undertaken.
