A comprehensive Joint Industry Programme has been undertaken by Shell Global Solutions International B.V., BG Technology and BP Amoco plc., to investigate the properties and use of high strength steel line pipe of grade X100 for the construction of pipelines. The primary area of application of such pipelines is in long distance, onshore, high pressure pipelines for the transmission of dry, sweet natural gas. The studies have shown high strength steels can offer considerable savings in capital expenditure and associated life cycle costs. The X100 steel is not yet an established or code recognised grade and the joint industry programme included extensive mechanical and metallurgical testing to characterise industrial prototype, large diameter X100 pipes together with tests to assess their field weldability and properties of weldments. This work was supplemented with further studies of damage and defect tolerance. Cost optimisation formed part of the overall programme together with theoretical studies of construction technology, logistics and economics. Incremental gains can be made throughout construction with the logistic advantages of transporting, construction, welding and inspection of lighter, thinner wall or smaller diameter line pipes. However, construction in such pipe material poses a number of technical challenges such as field bending and supply condition of factory made bends and fittings, optimisation of field girth welding and double jointing procedures and thorough evaluation of suitable welding consumables to ensure that overmatching weld metal with sufficient toughness is deposited. Although the current project has determined the properties of welds obtained using some present day welding consurnables and studies have identified the likely optimum welding processes and future filler materials, it is clear that fine tuning of these aspects is needed for industrial use.
