The complexity of electronic systems for automotive applications is rapidly growing. While the requirements for performance and reliability are still increasing, the costs for electronic systems have to be reduced simultaneously. To achieve these goals, the reliability of the electronics has to be considered already during the design phase. This paper discusses the environmental and lifetime requirements for electronics being used in automotive applications. Related operating conditions and their specific damaging effects an components, assemblies and modules will be sketched. New qualification methods will be adressed to contribute to the reliability of future automotive electronic systems.
