The paper briefly describes design parameters of braid technology and various applications of braid structures for the development of inflatable restraints for enhanced vehicle occupant protection. The inflatable tube technology represents a significant departure from crash safety systems approaches and has potential to mitigate occupant injuries and fatalities as demonstrated in many tests, especially in real-world crashes. Today, although the basic system requirements have already been met, it is anticipated that a deeper understanding of the behaviour of braid within the air bag application will lead to increased efficiency of the product. The possibility of designing to a different fibre orientation is being explored. The angle of the braid has a direct relationship to the slack ratio. However, the slack ratio calculations alone do not account for other factors, such as the effects of friction, yarn stretch, and yarn straightening within the braid architecture. Therefore, development of a more precise model for calculating the length reduction capability of braid will be validated in testing, and will include those elements that previously have not been addressed. In addition to slack ratio, a prediction of tension that is developed by the tubular air bag during deployment is also needed. Once this model is completed, the optimisation of braid design is expected to reduce reliance on component testing. Significant improvements are possible for both the developed bag tension and slack ratio once the braid is designed within a higher range of fibre orientations. These improvements are expected to reduce costs while improving system performance and promoting even greater adaptability.
