By installing a Citect HMI pipe line monitoring system at their 6200 miles Texas Gas transmission pipeline Williams could save costs ecxeeding 5 million USD per year. The system operates over a 384 kbps WAN (wide area network), and monitors 68480 control points and 26 pipe line compressor stations in seven states at a central operations center. Each compressor station contains a single server responsible for communications, alarming, and historical data logging for the site. A proxy server in Owensboro, Kentucky, contains the project configuration for the entire pipe line. All data are provided transparently across the network. A number of visual tools provide large amounts of usable information. Users can check compressor performance parameters including speed and horsepower in real time. The engine performance for a given suction temperature and discharge pressure can be determined from the performance curve of horsepower versus suction pressure. The ability to remotely assess and resolve field issues and to take corrective actions from any location by using the network or internet client substantially reduces the actual maintenance costs.
