Reduction of pass-by noise caused by trains has become a major environmental issue. Many sources contribute to the pass-by noise of trains, like train wheels, tracks, train motors, auxiliary equipment and aerodynamic noise. As train wheels are a main contributor to the pass-by noise of trains, a huge interest lies in investigating the acoustical performance of specially designed low-noise train wheels in comparison with standard wheels when a train is passing-by. Standard measurements are not capable to separate the noise generated by the different sources, especially when these are passing by at very high speeds. In that case, the microphone array technique needs to be applied. This technique allows the quantification of the noise emission of different sound sources and in particular of train wheels. This technique corrects for the Doppler-shifts, eliminates non-wheel noise and tracks the noise from each individual wheel. This paper presents the results of the application by LMS Engineering of the phased microphone array technique for quantification of the noise reduction of Lucchini prototype wheels mounted on a high-speed ETR470 Pendolino train and shows the significant reduction in OA-pass-by noise level obtained by the use of these prototype wheels.
