Ground-borne noise and vibration are very important issues in relation to constructions of underground railway tunnels in cities. Unlike air-borne acoustics, ground-borne wave propagation is more complex involving different types of waves. At the request of Citytunneln, Odegaard & Danneskiold-Samsoe A/S (ODS) has studied propagation of ground-borne vibration from underground ralway tunnels, partly using a finite element method (FEM) combining the specially developed absorbing boundary elements and partly using OSIRIS, a commercial computer software package originally developed for modelling of seismic propagation. This paper focuses on the studies by OSIRIS. Results are also compared with the FEM calculations and with measurements. By contrast to other model like FEM, OSIRIS has a very fast computational speed suitable for parameter studies, as computations can be repeated quickly. The restriction of OSIRIS is that the geometry should be horizontally stratified media only, and that particular objects like tunnels cannot be included. Nevertheless, it is found that the tunnel influence on the ground-borne vibration transmissions reduces greatly along the distance. Therefore, OSIRIS, though without tunnels, can still be used to give a favourable prediction as long as the receiving distance is not too close to the source.
