Automobile technology has been developing for rather more than a century now, and has made immense strides in terms of greater economy and better environmental acceptability in that time. However, world population growth and the associated burdens on the ecological system are imposing more and more severe demands on the environmental acceptability of the automobile. It is not possible to satisfy these requirements primarily by restricting mobility unless one is prepared to risk damaging the economy and the standard of living to a considerable extent. On the contrary, our prospects of overcoming these challenges in the future will depend on our making systematic use of new technical opportunities. Mobility and the maintenance of a world worth living in are not contradictory demands. The examples quoted in these remarks show that possible solutions are becoming evident. We can only secure widespread approval for them if we act jointly with those responsible for the needs of society and discuss them openly with all social groups.
