The possibility to reliably simulate the process of in-service welding is presented. 3D finite element models of circumferential fillet welds were developed. These models were used to predict weld zone geometries and T8/5 cooling times. Comparisons between experimental and predicted values of T8/5 have shown that it is possible to calculate the thermal fields and weld cooling times to a useful accuracy. Predictions were within 12% of measured values.
