The defects (microcracks) on the rail surface are cumulated usually in a 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm thick wavy layer (wave amplitude 0.01 mm to 1 mm, wave period 2 mm to 2000 mm) which has an increased wearability and has to be removed by grinding-off the runned-in rail surfaces. A new techniques (needle-milling for removing the defected surface layer, grinding with grooved honstones at transverse vibrations for removing the rail waviness and lamella-grinding for removing the operational rail roughness) were found efficient in a complex use during the rail restoration. A special 3-wagon repair train is recommended to be used under Russian conditions. A formula for calculating the wheel wear was derived and discussed. The wear intensity decreased with increasing microhardness of the wheel and can be reduced by electromechanical treatment of the wheel surface at the same stand where the wheels were turned.
