Geosynthetics in transportation related application can be used below pavements and rail track-beds, in asphalt overlays, for drainage and control of moisture in roads, reinforced soil retaining walls and slopes, embankment foundations and slope erosion control and rock fall protection. Some of these applications are described. Geosynthetics can be used to facilitate construction and improve performance of roads constructed over soft subgrades. A geosynthetic placed at the interface between the aggregate base course and the subgrade, can function as a separator which prevents the intermixing of the two dissimilar materials. When installed below subbase or base courses, geosynthetics provide reinforcement through lateral restraint, bearing capacity increase and tensioned membrane effect. Depending on their tensile strength and stiffness and their ability to absorb and bond with bituminous materials, geosynthetics in overlays can perform one or more of the following functions: Moisture barrier, stress relief and reinforcement. In recent years reinforced soil retaining walls (RSRW's) are being prefered over conventional rigid concrete structures. RSRW's have several advantages over traditional forms of construction: They have high tolerance to differential settlements and do not require expensive foundations. Reicnforced soil structures are able to withstand the effects of earthquakes better than conventional rigid concrete walls.
