This paper deals with a special kind of linear synchronous motor called transverse flux motor. It is designed to drive autonomous transportation vehicles, optionally equipped with a magnetic levitation system and a contactless energy and information transmission. The main advantages of the motor are the passive secondary part, consisting only of iron, and a high force density. In combination with a magnetic levitation system the vehicle has no wearing parts. An application of this system is useful where maintenance would cause expensive plant standstill. Other possible applications are places where dust, caused by the wear of conventional friction drives, is to be kept at a minimum, as in clean rooms or in food industries. Furthermore this system has advantages in low energy consumption and distinctly low noise. A new optimized type of the motor is presented within this paper.
