Integrity of structures implies fitness for operation over the entire life cycle. Different structures may contain such elements of which integrity can be considered independently. In the case of hydrocarbon transporting pipelines, these elements are girth welds and their crack like defects are the most important concerns. This paper - assuming quasi-static and cycle loading - demonstrates the application of fracture mechanics for the assessment of welded joints having root defects. Fatigue Crack propagation limit curves used in calculations are the results of own research work.
