The RBW (ride-by-wire) or XBW (x-by-wire) automotive control system for which the PRC (primary ride computer) forms the computational heart is the first to employ a multiplex databus as its prime data transfer medium. The fault-tolerant design of the computer system enables IV (intelligent vehicles) maintenance to be referred, whilst the computer design utilizes VLSI as well as ASIM and ASIC technology to reduce component count and thereby improves system reliability. The use of ADA throughout the software life cycle, coupled with automated structured methods, has been successful with less than 2 % of non-ADA source code being required. In IVs of the future, RBW or XBW automotive control consisting of SBW (steer-by-wire) AWS (all-wheel-steerable) diversion, DBW (drive-by-wire) AWD (all-wheel-driveable) propulsion, BBW (brake-by-wire) AWB (all-wheel-brakeable) dispulsion and ABW (absorb-by-wire) AWA (all-wheel-absorbable) suspension controls might not only do much of the work. They might also monitor themselves, respond adaptability to altering demands and emergencies, and have the intelligence to perform the heterogeneous discrete IV functional systems operating smoothly and efficiently. Telerobotic-driven unmanned IVs will never become a reality in road transport, since there will always be circumstances in which decisions must be left to the HD (human driver). That is why, automotive high-tech will continue to give the HD the final responsibility for the safety-critical decisions. The preceding is a concise and very personal compilation of some features of the mechatronic active RBW or XBW automotive control challenged in a systems approach.
