The use of magnesium alloys in the automotive industry is increasing due to the demand of extreme lightweight construction. Fusion joining of magnesium alloys is the subject of investigations, but is not yet used in industrial dimensions. Laser beam welding is characterized by a high welding speed and low energy per length. Thus, cooling conditions are completely different compared to conventional welding methods. Because of the thermophysical properties and the high absorption rate, laser beam welding is a suitable welding method for magnesium alloys. The weldability of magnesium alloys and the properties of non-welded and laser beam welded alloys was investigated. The low viscosity of the melting pool requires measures to prevent sagging of the seam root. Constructive possibilities and the use of new filler wires are presented.
