Gas strorage by adsorption on microporous carbon is possible at relatively low pressures. A special char-activation technique was developed to produce large sorbent elements without creating undersirable meso and macroporosity. The method involves multiple cycles of low-temperature oxygen chemisorption, followed by thermal desorption of surface oxides in the absence of oxygen. Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) is known to form extremely microporous carbon upon carbonization and results of hydrogen-storage experiments are presented in this paper. The following observations can be made: The hydrogen-storage capacity increases with increasing burn-off, increasing specific surface area, and increasing micropore volume. Sorbent precursor and sample preparation may strongly affect gas-storage performance. The measured hydrogen uptake is somewhat larger for granular carbon than for the same material in the form of a compressed disc.
