The use of adsorbent materials in a storage vessel for storing natural gas at relatively low pressure (35 to 40 bar) is a possibility to make natural gas vehicles competitive with other types of vehicle. A Spanish anthracite is a very good raw material for the preparation of highly microporos activated carbons by chemical activation. In the present study, a deeper analysis has been done in order to obtain the activated carbon with the best methane adsorption capacity by unit volume of adsorbent. In addition, different binders have been tested for preparing carbon monoliths. An intermediate activation degree produces an activated carbon with the best equilibrium between micropore volume and packing density, giving an experimental CH4 delivery of 145 V/V. Carbon monoliths with very good mechanical properties have been prepared using a binder from Waterlink Sutcliffe Carbons. The optimum amount of binder is 15 %, giving a 126 V/V delivery of CH4.
