In this study, a color matching test was conducted to measure the appearance of each color at different illuminance levels. Using these measurement data, we developed a simulation program to reproduce a nighttime headlighted image from a daytime image captured by a CCD camera. From the results of the color matching test, we were able to confirm the occurrence of a Purkinje phenomenon and a shift of stimulated photoreceptors from the cone to rod acceptors. Also, by developing a separate simulation technique for road signs having reflectance widely different from the road surface reflectance, more realistic images were reproduced. Thus, applying color engineering techniques, we were able to obtain more accurately predicted images and to come a step closer to the goal of conducting headlamp visibility evaluation tests on a CRT monitor.
