Current headlamp systems can be subdivided into projection and reflection systems. Whilst, in the case of the projection system the light from the bulb is initially bundled on one focal plane and then projected onto the road via a lens, the light distribution is created solely via the reflector and the optional optical pattern in the lens in the case of the reflection system. Certain characteristics which determine the use of one or other system in the vehicle depending on the requirements regarding construction space, lighting technology and design are linked to the functional method. In comparison with conventional reflection and projection systems, the use of fibre-optic technology in headlamps offers new possibilities with regard to lighting technology design and construction space. The fibre-optic headlamp is comprised of a coupling unit, one or more optical fibres and a corresponding number of output units. The specific and flexible design of light distribution is possible via the special design of the individual components. With an efficiency of approximately 20 - 35 %, the fibre-optic headlamp is able to compete with the current conventional reflection and projection systems.
