A growing economy means growth in country, state, and governmental roadway use. The pressure placed on the transportation infrastructure increases every day, along with the driving public's demands for faster, safer, and more convenient travel. Such increased speed limits, high-profile designs, and the expanding population of motor vehicles should force roadway safety engineers to take a hard look at barrier design, especially due to many fatal accidents with the following characteristics: 1. Impact with the unyielding concrete results in severe damage to the vehicle. 2. Concrete has a highly frictional surface. 3. After impact, damaged vehicles can be shoulder hazards, nuisances, and deadly projectiles. This paper will elucidate the solutions in improving the effectiveness of concrete barrier design in roadways, construction zones (K-rails), and raceways. Safety for the travelling public as well as highway maintenance crews is of paramount importance, and the improvements to existing roadway safety devices (barrier rail) can save money and lives.
