Automotive ECU (Electronic Control Unit) testing is still primarily carried out with specially equipped test vehicles. This approach, however, is costly, time-consuming, and inefficient. Also, the safe operation of the ECU at all possible operating points, especially at not allowed ones, cannot be guaranteed from these test drives alone. This functional verification is even more difficult when there are several interconnected ECUs from different suppliers. The vehicle manufacturer is responsible for the overall integration and safe operation of the multiple ECUs. The test system presented provides a means of evaluating the correct interaction of all interconnected ECUs in the laboratory. An overview of the ETAS test system used at the truck manufacturer MAN is given, as well as first practical results and a brief outlook to the near future of this test approach.
