It has been widely accepted that the vehicles in the next decade and beyond will consist of more than one drive train, unlike in the previous century where the drive train of vehicles was limited exclusively to internal combustion engines. Increasing concerns over emissions from vehicles polluting the environment demand that the vehicles of all types achieve near zero emission. Hydrogen has always been recognized as the cleanest form of fuel available in abundant quantities. It is clean and efficient. It yields more energy per unit of weight than any other existing fuel, and its only waste product is water vapor. Hydrogen can be produced from a number of sources such as hydrocarbon through steam reforming, water electrolysis using low cost electricity based on renewable sources of energy such as photovoltaics. The foremost problem in using hydrogen as a fuel has been safe and economical storage in transporting it from a source to the point of use as well as storing on board a vehicle. Eriergy Conversion Devices (ECD) and its subsidiary Ovonic Battery Co. based on the principles of disordered materials invented and developed by its' founder, Stanford R. Ovshinsky, has solved the basic and fundamental problem and developed products ranging from Ovonic nickel metal hydride batteries, Ovonic solid hydrogen storage system, Ovonic regenerative fuel cell and other subsystems. In this paper ECD's hydrogen strategy based on its technology and products for mobile and stationary applications for distributed power is discussed.
