Superconducting railway transformers constitute an important advance in the innovation of drive systems for future generations of electrical rail vehicles. They make a significant contribution towards meeting the operators' demands for powerful, lightweight, energy-saving, environmentally friendly, efficient trains. This new technology not only enables the manufacture of compact units that are up to 50 % lighter than conventional transformers, a superconducting transformer also has a much better efficiency, namely more than 99 %.
