This paper shows the present stage of development in regard to the high power automotive starter/generator as developed by Siemens, and the progress made since 1998. Attention is given to the technical motor design, especially to the number of chosen pole pairs. After about 100 prototypes built, the direct start asynchronous starter/generator with water cooling offers outstanding advantages satisfying safety requirements despite the relatively small air gap in comparison to the permanent magnetic synchronous starter/alternator. The asynchronous starter/generator in disc rotor design as a double stator motor would be ideal for high performances if the control of the large axial forces did not require very extensive constructional efforts.
