PSA Peugeot Citroen engine development strategy towards reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emission, initiated in 1998 with the HDI Diesel engine family, is now going on in the field of gasoline engines with the new HPI stratified charge direct injection engine. The first application allows a 10 % improvement of fuel consumption and CO2 emission relative to the comparable conventional engine. PSA Peugeot Citroen believes that the extension of stratified charge direct injection, alone or combined with other technologies, and associated with a NO(x) storage aftertreatment system, is the most promising way to achieve the CO2 emission target of 140 g/km on fleet average in year 2008. The condition for this extension is a large diffusion of 'low sulfur' fuels (less than 10 ppm) in order to fulfill EURO 4 (and further) emission limits without too much sacrifying the fuel consumption. Technical progress in the field of combustion and after-treatment system, together with association with other technologies like turbo-charging, should then allow up to 20 % improvement compared to conventional engines.
