Details of new-concept microgrooved bearings characterized by shallow circumferential grooves covering the bearing surface are described and their performance is compared with normal plain bearings. Increased oil flow reduces the temperature rise of MGBs in firing operation of an engine by 10 - 20 %. Initial light wear and plastic deformation at the ridges between the microgrooves result in easier running-in of MGBs. Fatigue life of overplated layer can be prolonged by several times by employing appropriate microgroove design. Much oil can be retained in the microgrooves, which enables MGBs to run without oil supply for a certain period.
