A method based on complex variables for obtaining sensitivity derivatives in conjuction with a Navier-Stokes flow code is described. The complex variable approach is found to be efficient and accurate and does not suffer from step-size related truncation errors. The resulting sensitivity derivatives are calibrated by comparisons with finite-difference solutions and experimental data for several aerodynamic configurations of practical interest. The methodology is straightforward and can be applied to an existing code with moderate effort.
