The Lithium-Ion powered Altra EV is Nissan's first electric vehicle designed for the North American market. This four passenger compact van is being demonstrated in California as part of Nissan's effort to explore technology, market, and infrastructure issues affecting electric vehicles. This three year demonstration began in November 1998. Initial market response to the vehicle has been favorable. The Altra EV has demonstrated real world travel of 130 kilometers, but drivers seem most comfortable when restricting typical trip range to 40 kilometers or less. The Li-Ion battery technology has provided all drivers with consistent initial battery pack capacity. Standard deviation of initial pack capacity was only 2 %. Charging infrastructure installation costs have averaged from 2984.23 USDollars for installation inside the garage of a single-family home to 5664.25 USDollars for installation outside in the driveway of a single-family home.
