In this paper, semi-active control of a vehicle suspension system with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper is presented. The design of the MR damper working in flow mode is described. The damping force of the MR damper can be controlled through changing the applied electric current. The response date of the MR damper is obtained experimentally using an INSTRON test machine. The Bouc-Wen model is adopted to describe mathematically the performance of the MR damper. Using the optimization tool in MATLAB, the coefficients of the model are obtained. Finally, a scaled quarter car model is set up including the MR damper and a semi-active control strategy was adopted to control the vibration of suspension system. Simulation results show that with the semi-active control, the vibration of suspension system can be well controlled.
