The characteristic of the electrification system includes the power supply, the distribution network and the traction drive these are the major contributors in the generation of EMI. Electro-magnetic interference occurs when unwanted electric or magnetic fields from one circuit (normally high power) interfere or couple with another. The severity of the coupling and the magnitude of the interference will determine if the interference will affect safety critical systems on the railway network. The design of the railway system and the control of the level of electromagnetic interference are paramount in relation to the safe operation of the railway. Modelling the electrification system is able to provide a predictive assessment for the levels of EMl. Modelling is vital in the design process for a new railway, or the upgrade of an existing railway system. This paper identifies a mathematical modelling tool that can be used for calculations of interference levels. A case study of a typical 25 kV 'Classic' booster transformer, and Autotransformer arrangement of electrified railway is analysed. The results of the levels of earth potentials and induced voltages into line-side equipment are examined. The commercial risks on new projects or upgrades to existing railways, due to electromagnetic interference, can be minimised by the modelling process. Modelling will provide detailed design information on the performance of the railway system and predictive evidence of compliance with E.M.C. National and European Standards.
