The Electrical Engineering Department (DIE) and the Transport Research Centre (CRT) of the University of Genova participate in several European research projects funded by the EC and by the private industry. Some of these projects are related to electromagnetic interference in railway traction systems. In this paper the authors describe the preliminary research activity done on modelling of multiconductor transmission lines for calculation of conducted and radiated interference originated by the traction current. The work is done partly within the project ESCARV (Electrical System Compatibility for Advanced Railway Vehicles), funded by the European commission. The methods described are based on conventional theories and implemented for computer calculation without making use of any special purpose commercial software package, but within Matlab. In this way the models are easily interfaced with other component models developed in the same software environment, as required by the overall system modelling issues. Some sample results are reported and cornmented, highlighting the aspects of the approach adopted.
