Three phase driving system has realised for the first time a truly four quadrant operation without any contactor except for the emergency purpose and this means a good reason to change from conventional traction systems to an innovative traction system rather than to replace dc traction motor by a better ac traction motor. The author proposes distributed traction system using many traction motors and relatively few power equipment including traction inverters and their input converters with pure electric braking which does not use friction brake at all except for the emergency purposes. This traction system is a superior combination of Japanese style distributed traction motors and European style concentrated power equipment. Description of how Japanese high speed trainsets have realised by far the lightest design is given in detail. Pure electric braking systems, being developed by the author's group, is also described of the test given by a private railway company with perspective view of how it works advantageously to modern railway traction systems.
