This paper uses results of analyses, simulations, and operational tests to compare manual driving to driving with automatic control of the headway distance between a trailing and a preceding vehicle. Data and information obtained in an operational test of an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system provide the basis for discussing basic approaches for designing and evaluating systems that will assist drivers by automatically controlling the range to an impeding vehicle.
