The demand in the automobile sector for greater comfort in the vehicle is of a high importance alongside the requirements for low emissions of pollutants. This applies in particular to the vehicle's acoustics as perceived in the first instance by the passengers in the vehicle. Measures presently employed to reduce the noise levels by using additional damping materials are associated with a higher strucural weight. Alternatives for the future are therefore being searched for in combination with the secondary condition of realizing a low structural weight. It is for this reason that the application of so-called intelligent materials is appropriate since these can be used to realize an overall adaptive system. The term adaptronics is generally understood as being the process of creating 'more intelligent' structures on the basis of 'multi-functional elements'. Multi-functional elements exhibit at least two functional components (actuator, sensor, or controlling mechanism). In such multi-functional elements, shape memory alloys, bimetals, piezo-electric components, and other advanced materials are normally used. Examples for such elements in automotive systems are automatic day/night mirrors and driving-dynamics control systems. Various possibilities exist for acoustics applications in the inside, for instance the use of active vibration compensators for the roof panel and chassis.
