Results of investigations concerning applied properties and in particular thermal resistance of friction materials used in the automotive industry are presented in the paper. Laminate wastes with the phenol or epoxide matrix reinforced with glass, cotton fibre or sheets of paper were used as a component that improves applied properties of a product. The waste materials were subjected to carbonization and the conditions were selected in such a way as to obtain diversified degree of carbonization. The parameters were determined on the basis of derivatographic and chromatographic tests of laminate wastes. The formed friction material containing wastes was subjected to tests determining basic mechanical and tribological properties. On the basis of obtained results an influence of carbonized wastes on thermal resistance of the friction material was analyzed. The structural investigations allowed determining thermal phenomena taking place in the friction lining and transformation of the outer layer at elevated temperatures.
