This paper presents a novel multi-functional dc-dc converter scheme for an urban EV drive system employing an axial flux permanent magnet brushless dc machine. Firstly, the converter can serve as a bidirectional dc-dc converter, with an ultracapacitor bank connected to its lowervoltage side and a battery to its higher-voltage side, for load leveling the battery and high-efficiency recovery of the regenerative braking energy. Secondly, the converter can serve as another bidirectional dc-de converter, with the battery connected to the lower-voltage side and the motor/inverter to die higher-voltage side, for constant power operation of the brushless dc motor drive and its regeneration control. The novel power stage topology and the control strategies of the multifunctional dc-dc converter are automatic and smooth during the change of different operation modes. Analysis of the operation principle of the multifunctional dc-dc converter is given. Regenerative braking control at motor speed both below and above the base speed are addressed. The optimized specifications of the dc-dc converter have been derived based on the analysis of the data taken from a small ICE vehicle used by a power supply authority. These optimized specifications minimized the power rating of the dc-dc converter and the ultracapacitor bank. The proposed multifunctional dc-dc converter enables simple circuits, high efficiency, and low cost.
