Battery technology is changing rapidly to meet demands for increased capacity and reduced volume and weight. Therefore advanced battery systems like NiMH, Lithium-Ion or the ZEBRA-Battery have been developed for electric vehicle (EV) use. These battery systems are less tolerant regarding to limits of operating ranges. To maintain the battery cells within their operating limits is the task of electronic devices called Battery Management System (BMS). Even for lead-acid batteries the use of BMSs inside the vehicle results in better battery performance and lower battery system costs over lifetime. A battery system in this context has to be defined as a system consisting of battery modules, charger, BMS, heating and cooling devices. BMS are more and more important for EVs, hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and also for normal intemal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to lower energy consumption of vehicles. Therefore each vehicle type has different load profiles for the battery, resulting in different control algorithms for each type. The Battery Management System BattMobil II has been developed at the Technical University of Berlin. It has been designed for use in Electric Vehicles (EV) powered with lead-gel batteries. Advanced batteries like NiMH or Lithium-Ion require a cell related BMS . The knowledge about the State-Of-Charge (SOC) and the State-Of-Health (SOH) gets more and more important. The diagnosis purposes have been increased and the BMS can be configured as a test bench, when an extemal load is connected to the traction battery.
