High Power (HP)-cells are designed for batteries in hybrid vehicles with a certain pure electric driving range (hybrid busses, hybrid cars). These vehicles require a smaller energy storing system than pure electric vehicles do. Nevertheless, the same power must be given in order to provide an acceleration behaviour equivalent to a system with a combustion engine. NiMH - High Power(HP) - cells designed for these applications have increased power output, quick-charging capability and an optimum long service life. This is partial achieved at the expense of energy densities of course, which at 55-60 Wh/kg and 150..165 Wh/l are substantial lower than those of typical NiMH-batteries for pure EVs (up to 80 Wh/kg, 220 Wh/I). Conversely, the load response is significant better (up to 300W/kg) and charging time is much shorter (100% charge within 1 hour, 80% in 10 mins). Ultra High Power (UHP) - cells are the basic element of a propulsion battery provided for power assist applications in hybrid vehicles currently under development at various automobile manufacturers. Different from batteries for the above mentioned hybride vehicles, Ultra High Power - batteries provide an only limited amount of energy, since they mainly operate as a power source for serving peak power demand under acceleration or for absorption of energy under regenerative braking. High load discharge (up to 900 W/kg) and capability of absorbing high power recharge pulses (up to 1000 W/kg) are the most prominent features (values based on cell level). Because of typical high power energy throughput under HEV-operation UHP - batteries require an advanced effective thermal control system for dissipating waste heat. This is crucial for maintaining good performance over a long operation period. Depending on state of charge (SOC) and on depth of discharge (DOD), NiMH - UHP - cells are capable of a high energy throughput over life. This ranges from more than 3000 cycles under 100% DOD to more than 350k cycles with a SOC-swing of 4% at 70%SOC.
