In this paper a new combustion model is presented. This model is implemented in a modified version of the KIVA-II code. The nonpremixed combustion is simulated using a coherent flamelet model. Coherent flamelet models use a transport equation for Sigma, the flame area per unit volume. The reaction rate (per unit volume) is calculated by multiplying Sigma times the flux per unit area. The transition from the premixed combustion model to the nonpremixed combustion model occurs when a critical Dahmkohler number is reached. A two step reaction scheme is used for the premixed and nonpremixed combustion. In the first step, fuel and oxygen are converted to carbon monoxide and water. In the second step, the carbon monoxide is oxidized to form carbon dioxide. Calculations using the flamelet model are compared with data from two direct injection diesel engines: a diesel engine with optical access (Dec, 1997) and a single cylinder version of a Caterpillar 3406 heavy-duty truck engine.
