This paper describes the design features of the NV2550 rear wheel drive manual transmission. Features of this transmission were developed to provide easily adaptable installation into many original equipment manufacture (OEM) vehicle drive trains. This transmission provides a high degree of durability and performance which enhances the end user's (customer) satisfaction. Some of the features include: 1. Five speeds and reverse, all in constant mesh and fully synchronized. 2. Pleasing passenger car shift effort and quality. 3 The availability of both 4x2 and 4x4 versions. 4. Generously sized bearings and gears for long life durability. The NV2550 was designed to be a robust manual transmission suitable for use with 4 cylinder (2.5l) engines. This design can be applied to compact pick-ups and sport utility vehicles. The transmission features a 76mm center distance providing an easy to package gear set and bearing system combined with a state of the art single rail shift selection system. The base transmission design incorporates a 3.85:1 first gear ratio and an option of two overdrive (5th) ratios of .80 and .75:1. This total gear ratio spread of 4.6:1 is covered with five forward gear ratios providing well-balanced ratio steps for optimal vehicle performance and fuel economy.
