Ecological and economical requirements have forced research and industry to closely examine ways of reducing the use of coolants. In the area of fine boring, we have not only the results of investigations of the basic principles for achieving this but also promising initial results from applications already in practice. It has been shown that both fine boring tools with guide pads and PCD tools with fixed blades can be used with minimum lubrication with good results for quality and tool life. PCD has proved to be the best material for guide pads. A number of machine manufacturers are currently changing over to applying reduced quantities of lubricants by means of a double channel system which mixes the lubricants close to the connection point. The ecological and economical advantages of using minimum lubrication are clear. The limitations of dry machining and minimum lubrication are difficult to perceive at the present stage in development and will require new solutions to solve these as they occur.
