Laser welding is now well established in the high volume, sheet metal using industries such as automotive, where weld depths are usually less than 3 mm. The ability of the same laser machines to produce welds in a single pass to greater depths has seldom been utilized in industry. However, the realization by the heavy fabrication industries of the true cost of distortion and fabrication inaccuracy has prompted many of them to consider laser welding as an alternative to arc welding. The way has been lead by European Shipbuilding yards who are now beginning to exploit laser welding in production. Other industries with similar materials and structures such as off highway vehicles are beginning to follow. The paper will review some of the welding process materials and weld qualification work which has facilitated this progress. Initially for CO2 laser welding and more recently with high power Nd:YAG lasers.
