This paper focuses on the requirements and the potential benefits of using a servo-hydraulic shaker facility ('road simulator') to replicate and assess heavy vehicle dynamic wheel loads. A description of the simulator, the vehicles and the data processing is given and possible problems, mainly in terms of ensuring precision and dynamic calibration, are pointed out. Results for the three different vehicles are shown and an explanation for the discrepancies between road and laboratory measurements is given. Recommendations for further work are derived from the experimental results.
