Guided acoustic waves can be generated and detected in pipe walls using narrowband ultrasonic transducers. Some of the inserted energy leaks into the pipe insulation, some is lost in the fluid the pipe is carrying, and some of the remaining energy goes into the formation of guided wave packets with distinct frequencies and sound speeds, called modes. Some guided wave modes are quite sensitive to wall thinning due to corrosion and erosion in ship's piping, and selection and exploitation of these modes is the basis for guided wave NDE technology. Guided waves travel long distances in metal pipe materials without significant attenuation with removal of less than a foot of insulation, distances to over 50 feet of insulated pipe can be inspected for corrosion and erosion. This Office of Naval Research project is transitioning guided wave technology from Pennsylvania State University to a Fleet and commercial inspection tool. This paper discusses progress to date and long term goals for development of guided wave nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods for detection corrosion under insulation in shipboard piping systems. Guided wave techniques are well suited to the shipboard environment - they can be implemented in physically restricted areas like nested piping runs, require minimal insulation removal for imspection of large piping systems, pose no radiation problems, and can inspect in difficult-to-access areas. Shipboard trials are tentatively scheduled late this fiscal year.
