As aircraft age, the initiation and growth of small cracks at multiple sites pose a threat to the aircraft's safety. The ability to assess the growth, and subsequent interaction, of these cracks in a probabilistic model has been developed and some results are presented here. The analysis covers a 'cradle-to-grave' period in that the initiation of cracks, the growth of cracks, corrosion, crack link-up, residual strength and inspections and maintenance are all modeled. Life extension of aging power plants, both fossil and nuclear, is likewise an important topic of concern. All of the life limiting issues of concern for aging aircraft, including multiple site damage, initiation and growth of cracks, corrosion, crack link-up, residual strength, inspections and maintenance are important issues in power plant life extension as well. Moreover, the plant aging should be considered in a probabilistic framework because of the inherent uncertainties involved with multiple sources of damage and uncertain inspection procedures. This paper illustrates the assessment of aging aircraft and points out how such methods can be used directly to assess power plant aging issues.
