Sandwich panels have long been used in the aricraft industry because of their high stiffness-weight ratio. Most of these panels have been produced using diffusion bonding combined with superplastic forming technology. Large resistance spot welded panels provide the process industry with expansive surfaces, important for efficient heat transfer. Passenger ferries, trains and other lightweight transportation vehicles also utilize aluminium extrusion technology. The rapid development of laser welding has brought welded sandwich panels to the attention of the metals industry in general. Potential applications vary from small transportation vehicles, such as passenger cars and trains, to construction of ships, bridges and buildings. Depending on the application and panel type, weight reductions of between 30 and 50 % may be achieved. A wide range of different designs and applications will be discussed in the paper, and the current Technology Programme KENNO - Light Weight Panels, will be introduced.
