TGP (Tennessy Gas Pipeline) owned by El Paso Energy operates three interstate pipeline systems of 16000 miles with more than 70 compressor stations. About 30000 data points at meters and compressor stations are collected and data are stored in servers. The system is operated by four controllers. In order to optimize the pipeline operation and efficiencies the object-oriented expert-system programming language Gensym G2 was applied. The controllers pipe line operating knowledge is implemented in the expert system in the form of rules and procedures in a Proactive Controllers Assistant (ProCA) system. Daily added information results in a dynamic, constantly improved system which supports the controllers and the planning departments. ProCA displays the efficiency of each pipe section and identifies sections where pressures are falling. It is also used to protect transportation equipment. Real time bar charts diplay fuel consumption and costs for each station. Alarms are managed by Fault Expert, also a Gensym product. The expert system provides support for the education of the controllers and for decisions to be made. The combination of operational and scheduling data for example helps to make intelligent decisions concerning the amount of operating horse power online. ProCA recommends which units to run, gas engine or electric motor-driven compressors. The operating costs are analyzed hourly. Virtual transmitters provided by ProCA can reduce capital and maintenance costs. An impressive feature available is connectivity for analyzing the pipeline system.
